This is a great question! I think one of the many things that makes Hamilton so special is that you do get to know your professors over time. There aren't many schools out there where students have dinner at their professor's house or meet them for lunch. I think that's also important when you leave Hamilton, because you can continue the mentoring relationship--and friendship for that matter--when you are in the "real" world and face different problems and questions. I should say though that with government courses in particular, I think it's important for the professor to play devil's advocate with every person and every different viewpoint. That challenges you and can make you strengthen your position or argument or can do the opposite. Of course, we all know Professor Eismeier is the CHAMPION when it comes to this! As far as professors knowing their students, I think that can very positive as well, especially when it comes to mentoring. It's nice to know that your professors actually care enough to get to know you as a person, not just a student. Finally, the most important thing is that everyone involved--students and professors-- have a sense of humor. Without that, you'll have neither friendship, nor mentoring, nor a fun college experience!
